The CO2 laser welding was conducted to investigate the effect of activating flux on laser welding of TA15 titanium alloy with 2.5mm thickness in this paper, which originally developed to improve the penetration depth and reduce the weld porosity for TIG welding of titanium alloy. Results show that the activating flux can eliminate weld undercut defect, and increase the weld depth with the same laser welding parameters. It is also ...

In the fields of medical equipment manufacturing and aerospace engineering, aluminum alloys are widely applied to make the shells of the electronic devices. Laser welding is considered as a suitable technology to produce those components for the lower heat input and higher joint strength. In this paper, a 4.0kW disc laser was used to weld...

For laser welding of AlMgSi (6xxx) alloys filler alloys are commonly required to reduce the hot cracking susceptibility by rising the silicon content in the weld pool to a non critical value. For slender welds obtained e.g. in welding with high brightness lasers, this is often difficult to achieve. The use of hypereutectic Al-Si filler materials might be helpful; however these fillers are not readily available in the form of thin wire. In the present work, hypere...

In Al alloy welding, the linear laser welds have the shear-tensile strength lower than that of the base metal because of porosities and cracks resulting from unstable keyhole and high crack sensitivity. Various techniques have been introduced to improve the joint strength of laser welds and the laser weaving is also an alternative. In this research, Al alloy sheets were used as the base material with a thickness of 1mm, and lap welding and bead-on-plate crack test were implemented...

Titanium alloys are increasingly utilized in the aerospace sector as a result of their high specific strength, fatigue performance and corrosion resistance. It has been reported previously by the authors that high quality, low internal porosity content welds can be made in titanium alloys using near-infrared l...

    Collimated Laser Homogenizer
    Authors:

    Presented at ICALEO 2009

A new laser beam homogenizer has been developed which converts a highly spatial coherent, Gaussian laser beam into a collimated, square homogenized field. The optical device converts a lasers Gaussian input beam through multiplexing and recombination without optical interference and yet is collimated over > 5 meters. Laser beam property variations do not adversely affect the performance of the homogenizer in contrast to phase shifting homogenizers and can be utilized from the lasers objective lens entrance...

Lasers have been increasingly used for machining of various materials. One of the problems with laser machining is unwanted heat-affected zone, which downgrades the quality of the cut surface. Such heat-affected zone occurs very often due to lack of information on the characteristics of the beam intensity. The objective of this research is to develop a model that explains the characteristic of the...

In this paper, we demonstrated a single-mode Yb-doped fiber laser at 980nm pumped by cw and Q-switched 946 nm Nd:YAG laser. The Yb-doped fiber laser adopting two 0° fiber ends as cavity mirrors generated a cw output power of 1.32 W at 980 nm with the slope efficiency of 75.3%. The corresponding optical conversion efficiency was 66% from the incident pump power ...

    Presented at ICALEO 2009

While the Disk laser concept was invented in the early 90s, the first industrial products were available in the beginning of this decade. Since then, the disk laser is used in mass production and serves a large variety of application fields. The output power per disk has continually increased and reached a level of 2.5 kW per disk in 2007. As of today, the disk principle has not reached any fundamental limit regarding output power per disk or beam quality. In 2009 TRUMPF released a new series of in...
