In this paper, we demonstrated a single-mode Yb-doped fiber laser at 980nm pumped by cw and Q-switched 946 nm Nd:YAG laser. The Yb-doped fiber laser adopting two 0° fiber ends as cavity mirrors generated a cw output power of 1.32 W at 980 nm with the slope efficiency of 75.3%. The corresponding optical conversion efficiency was 66% from the incident pump power ...

Disk Laser: A New Generation of Industrial Laser
    Authors:
David Havrilla, TRUMPF Inc.; Plymouth MI USA
Ruediger Brockmann, Trumpf Laser Gmbh; Schramberg Germany
    Presented at ICALEO 2009

While the Disk laser concept was invented in the early 90s, the first industrial products were available in the beginning of this decade. Since then, the disk laser is used in mass production and serves a large variety of application fields. The output power per disk has continually increased and reached a level of 2.5 kW per disk in 2007. As of today, the disk principle has not reached any fundamental limit regarding output power per disk or beam quality. In 2009 TRUMPF released a new series of in...

    Presented at ICALEO 2009

Femtosecond laser texturing has proved to be a particularly powerful method for creating a wide variety of surface structures on the metal films, such as a hollow microbump-nanojet sturcture and disk-column-nanodroplet structure on the gold films. The process of femtosecond laser texturing does not rely on material removal, but on hydrodynamic flow produced ...

    Presented at ICALEO 2009

For several industries including aerospace, maritime, automotive and medical it is essential to develop a cost-effective, highly-reliable method to certify damage tolerances for fatigue-critical components. To certify materials for damage tolerances, they must have precise and repeatable artificial crack initiation sites in order to accurately measure fatigue deficits. At present, accepted methods of...

Surface treatment of Si3N4 and ZrO2 engineering ceramics with a CO2 laser and a fibre laser was conducted to identify changes in the fracture toughness (K1c). Vickers macro hardness indentation tests were employed prior to and after the laser treatment to investigate the near surface changes in the hardness of the engineering ceramics. Optical microscopy was then used to observe the near surface integrity, crack lengths and crack geometry within the engineering ceramics....

Although CO2 lasers have been shown to be capable of modifying the wettability of polymeric materials, it is known that the CO2 laser induced wettability modifications of these materials can degrade over time. This can be seen to be crucial from a commercial point of view as this would indicate that a shelf-life has to be establis...
