Silicon Laser Alloying for Metal Dusting Environment
    Authors:
Muhammad Ejaz, Corrosion and Protection Centre; Manchester UK
    Presented at ICALEO 2005

Metal dusting is catastrophic carburization process, which causes metallic materials to disintegrate into particles of graphite, carbides and metal dust. This type of degradation typically takes place in the temperature range 450-800oC in gaseous atmospheres of high carbon activity. The resistance to metal dusting can be improved by increasing the amount of silicon in a metallic material. The silicon content of an alloy is typically kept below about 2%, because it adversely affects the mechanical properties of the material; however, higher concentr...

As a result of the STCU project # 2604 implementation, we got results, which describe the impact of low-energy, monochromatic light upon rabbit's organisms. The exposures with wavelengths : 412 nm (blue), 520 nm (green) and 605 nm (orange) were studied. The mean power of applied irradiation was within range from 0.05 to 0.25 mW. The immunological, morphological and biochemical aspects of monochromat...

Laser-induced plasmas were created by irradiating KrF eximer laser pulses on different substrates such as Si, Al, Fe and Co. A transverse magnetic field was applied to confine the plasmas. Plasma life times were measured using a fast phototube and a fast oscilloscope in the presence and absence of a magnetic field. The results indicate that the life times o...

Laser Assisted Turning of Hardened Steel
    Authors:
Katsuhiko Sakai, Shizuoka University; Hamamatsu Japan
    Presented at ICALEO 2005

A new machining method for turning of hardened steel is presented in this paper. It is a hybrid machining of conventional turning and laser heating of the material. As hardened steel is too hard to cut, it is grounded to improve it?s dimensional accuracy, though this process have poor productivity and requires relatively long time. By using laser-heating technology, hardness of steel can be reduced effectively, and thus turning is available for hardened steel instead of grinding. The softened area is limited in front of the cutting tool and then they will be removed, ...

Effect of laser welding parameters such as power, out-of-focus length, welding speed and feeding speed on weld properties are studied in tee and lap configurations. Two millimetre thick plates of AA6061 were welded in Tee joint configuration using a cw/Nd:YAG laser and AA5356 wire as the filler metal. The same set-up and wire feeding were used for the lap joining of two millimetre thick square tubes and plates of AA6061. Combination of Taguchi and E.M. design of experiments was carrie...

Laser consolidation (LC) is an innovative one-step material addition process. Based on CAD design, the process builds net shape functional parts or features on existing components layer-by-layer by using a laser beam to melt injected powder and re-solidifying it onto a substrate. In this paper, investigation of L...
