In order to producing parallel holes, a modified pulsed Nd:YAG laser for laser percussion drilling was presented . The resonator-amplifier structure is used, and the thermal effect of amplifier rod is used to compensate the change of divergence angle, keep a constant beam waist size at different power levels and adaptively collimate the output beam. Experiments of laser percussion drilling were carried out on nickel-based superalloy using a modified pulsed Nd:YAG laser, the influence factors of hole taper were studied. It was shown that peak power and pulse energy, combination of pulses, focal position, the number of pulses in the combination are the main factors of hole taper; in condition of high peak power, parallel holes and negative taper holes can be produced by controlling the number of pulses in the combination, using pulse combination of linearly increasing energies and focal position 1~2mm above the surface of pattern. An applied Nd:YAG laser and a feasible method of producing parallel holes have been presented for laser percussion drilling.
