Chances and Challenges Processing With High Brightness Lasers

Solid state fiber and thin disk lasers offer high power and high beam quality. They provide the opportunity to overcome former limitations by achieving e.g. previously unattained processing speed and processing depth in laser beam welding, and offer yet unmatched process efficiency. This contribution highlights current work on some of the challenges associated with the application of high brightness systems, including thermally induced focus shift, single and multi passes thick section welding, pool stability at high welding speed, and also addresses more exotic approaches like single mode laser hybrid welding and deep penetration laser alloying.
