In this paper, the mechanism of mode-locking using a semiconductor saturable absorption mirror (SESAM) in solid laser was analyzed by half-classical theory. We proposed a new opinion about how the SESAM works to realize mode-locking. Because the special structure of SESAM, when it works in a solid laser, SESAM is not just an absorber but also works as a gain medium together with solid crystal. In oscillator cavity, solid medium is pumped by an outside pump source (such as a semiconductor laser) and a light field Ec is produced. And then, this light field Ec works as a pump source and pumps SESAM to produce another light field. The axis modes of the two light fields interfere with each other and continuous wave mode-locking (CWML) is realized.
