A direct diode laser system with an elliptical spot size of 200um by 2mm at a focal point was manufactured, and its applicability to micro edge welding of thin nickel based alloy foils with 100um in thickness was investigated. The specimens with a straight or round edge ware successfully welded in similar conditions independent of the shape of edge. Although this edge welding was classified into thermal conduction type welding because of its low power density, in a case of a straight edge, specimens could be welded at a high speed exceeding 180mm/sec under an output power of 150W even thought the power density was lower than 44kW/cm2. Moreover, the phenomenon with quite calm without a plasma plume or sputter was realized which required for clean welding for micro electronics parts. On the basis of these results, the applications to the welding of bellows or pressure sensors were investigated.
