Presented at ICALEO 2006

The fabrication of three-dimensional (3-D) periodic optical media poses significant challenges at the forefront of todays nanotechnology to harness the new optical phenomena in nanostructures much smaller than the wavelength of light. Nanooptics has emerged as the new discipline that promises new optical materials photonic bandgap crystals, metamaterials, plasmonics to guide light at dimensions below conventional diffraction limits or probe electron wavefunctions in proteins with powerfully enhance optical resolution. To this end, our group is pursuing two parallel efforts in laser nanofabrication that promises to deliver 3-D photonic bandgap media with high optical quality.
