The objective of this work is to improve the surface properties of coatings on polymeric substrates by laser surface treatment. The coating can be deposited by different techniques such as physical vapor deposition, conventional chemical vapor deposition, laser chemical vapor deposition and low temperature thermal spray. The polymeric substrates can be laser-treated first to create a regular, roll-like texture and carbon-rich laser-modified surface to improve the subsequent deposition of coatings on the substrate. Then the coated surface can be laser-treated. In the second approach, the coating is first deposited on the polymer substrate by other technique and then the coating is laser-treated. The laser surface treatment in both cases improves the surface properties, such as the corrosion-, oxidation-, wear- and erosion-resistant properties, by modifying the coating microstructures and enhances the adhesion of coating to the substrate by fusing the coating-polymer interface without melting the polymer.
