Diode Pumped Solid State (DPSS) Q-switched nanosecond pulsed laser is becoming a laser of choice for a wide variety of processes in PCB manufacturing. So far the demand of higher processing speed and higher quality machining has been overcome by a higher power, higher repetition frequency and smaller pulse width lasers available in the market. Increasing the Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF) is usually a straight forward way to increase processing speed. However, for current generation of Q-switched DPSS lasers, with the increase in PRF the average power decreases and pulse-width and pulse-to-pulse energy variation increases. So simply increasing the PRF to achieve higher throughput is not a solution for increasing processing speed since the variation in these parameters could affect the processing. In this study we have demonstrated the use of our new generation Q-switched DPSS nanosecond pulsed green laser for high speed high quality PCB micromachining applications. We demonstrate the efficient use of our new generation of high power high repetition rate cost effective laser for depaneling, cutting as well as via drilling applications.
