This paper presents the study of the behavior of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite using shock produced by laser. It consists of irradiating surface by laser in ns-GW/cm2 range to generate stresses at interfaces between plies. The location and intensity of the stresses inside the material can be adjusted by playing on pulse duration and power density. At the rear surface of the target, velocity measurements give the history of the propagation of shock wave and detect damage. These profiles could be reproduced by simoulations to predict material behaviour and detect damage. Experiments have been done on 1, 4 and 8 plies CFRP composite and demonstrate the potential of the technique
