Growth of an oxide layer on the surface of stainless steel and titanium are shown to lead to color formation of the surface. This growth is demonstrated using a MOPA fiber laser by either control of power delivery to the surface or by changing of pulse parameters without change of average power. Color change of the surface is also shown linked to the change of chemical composition of the surface and growth of an oxide layer.
