Fabrication and Characterization of Nanoporous Manganese Structure by Laser Deposition Hybrid Selective Electrochemical Dealloying

Nanoporous metals are a new class of materials that possess desirable properties as both structural and functional materials. They inherit not only the high thermal and electric conductivity of metallic materials, but also have a uniform distribution of nano-holes and ultra-high specific surface area. Dealloying is basically a high-yielding fabrication method for nanoporous metals. This paper proposes and develops a novel approach to fabricate nanoporous structure on metal substrate for potential functionalization by laser deposition Cu-Mn alloy hybrid selective electrochemical dealloying. With a deep understanding of the dealloying behavior, we are able to selectively dissolve the relative inert element Cu instead of conventionally the relative active element Mn. As the result, a novel nano Mn towel gourd fiber structure was successfully realized by our hybrid approach. Due to the characteristics of laser deposition, we are also able to form this nano structure on any location with any shape. This paper reports in detail the fabrication approach for the nano Mn towel gourd fiber structure, including the formation basis, the influence of dealloying time, electric potential and temperature on the towel gourd fiber structures. The characterization of this nano structure is also well presented covering the microstructure and homogeneity, the size distribution of the nanopores and skeleton and also the nano-structure evolution during heating. The potential applications of this novel nano-structure are discussed.
