There are a few novel fiber laser cutting methods that have shown excellent test results. The cutting speed and quality with these methods exceeds those of conventional CO2-laser cutting methods. Most of these cutting methods use a single-mode fiber laser as the laser source. This paper compares laser cutting with single-mode and multi-mode fiber lasers in quality, cutting speed and productivity point of view. Single-mode fiber laser cutting tests were performed with 200 W and 1 kW lasers and multi-mode cutting tests were done with a 5 kW fiber laser. These high brightness lasers were used for thin sheet (up to 2 mm) high precision cutting and also for cutting of thicker materials. Quality, cutting speed and productivity studies were made with same kind of test samples between each laser. The results of this comparison and process parameters are presented in this paper.
