Direct metal deposition (DMD) is a laser aided rapid manufacturing technology which can be used to manufacture near-net shape components by layer-by-layer deposition of the material directly from CAD model. Inconel 625 is widely used in aerospace, chemical, and marine applications for its high temperature strength and good corrosion resistance. In the present study, a high-power continuous wave CO2 laser beam was focused on the Inconel 625 substrate to create a melt pool into which the Inconel 625 powder feedstock was delivered through an inert gas (He) flowing through a special nozzle where the powder streams converge at the same point on the focused laser beam. The structure and properties of the as-deposited sample were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and microhardness test. The effect of laser processing parameters on the resulting material structures and properties was analyzed using statistical techniques.
