10 kW fiber laser welding was performed on Type 304 stainltss steel plates. The effects of laser power and its density on weld penetration and welding defects were established. Plume behaior was observed, spectroscopic analyses of plumes were made, and laser absorption was measured during keyhole-type welding. The formation mechanisms of porosity, humping, underfill and undercut were interpreted from high-speed video cameras and X-ray transmission real time observation method.
