Residual stresses are an important parameter in the process optimization of laser cladding. An important parameter in the process optimization is the residual stresses. These stresses are caused by high thermal gradients and therefore differential thermal contractions are present, as well as the different thermo mechanical properties of the joined materials. An experimental setup was used to measure one dimensional average residual stresses based on deformation. Single cladtracks were produced on a small bar. The stresses were calculated from the difference in bar deformation after cladding and removal of the clad layer. Experiments were performed using Stellite 6, Vanadis23 and Inconel625 as clad material. The clad height was kept constant for all experiments, and the laser powder was adjusted real-time by controlling the meltpool width. Residual stresses were found to increase by increasing cladding speed.
