This paper reports a new surface coating technique that employs combined powder and wire feeding laser cladding in a single process to deposit dissimilar materials to form a graded coating. Initial experiments were aimed at demonstrating the feasibility and the material distribution in the combined wire and powder feeding laser-cladding process. Using mild steel as a substrate, nickel and copper as feeding stocks, the material distribution in the clad is investigated. The single-step graded clad tracks are analysed in terms of composition, microstructure and mechanical properties. Heat and fluid flow characteristics are modelled to explain the experimental findings. A 1.5 KW diode laser is used for the deposition.
