Of the many methods of laser treatment for improving materials surface properties that have been published, very few have reported on laser processing under chemically submerged conditions. In this work, silicon oxynitrides and TiN coatings are deposited on mild steel substrates. Laser beams with different powers and wavelengths (5-14 W pulsed Nd:YAG at 1064nm, and 10-100 W CW CO2 at 10.64m) are applied to specimens submerged in slurries of different chemical composition. The effect of various solution compositions and bath depths are examined in order to achieve the optimum experimental parameters. Surface morphology and microstructure of the deposited films and substrate surface layers are observed using both optical and scanning electron microscopes. The films chemical analysis are characterised using energy depressive X-ray analysis. Results of hardness measurements and wear tests are also reported.
