Femtosecond lasers gain increasing interest because of the unique combination of ultrashort pulse duration and extreme high peak power on the GW-level. In consequence, the machining process is dominated by multiphoton processes making it essentially universal and almost any type of material can be machined with excellent precision and quality. We report on...

Andrew A. Chesworth, Lee Laser, Inc.; Orlando FL USA
    Presented at ICALEO 2012

In the last few years laser scribing has become an important process in the manufacture of solar cells. Selective ablation of surface layers requires good control of the laser and a beam having flat intensity. In this paper we describe a method for generating square profiles based on the availability of new novel fibers. In one such application, a 300x300m square beam having a flat intensity profile is generated using a high power 50W green laser. The paper describes the method for generating such a beam and the possibility for future requirements of even smaller profi...

Diode Pumped Solid State (DPSS) Q-switched nanosecond pulsed laser is becoming a laser of choice for a wide variety of processes in PCB manufacturing. So far the demand of higher processing speed and higher quality machining has been overcome by a higher power, higher repetition frequency and smaller pulse width lasers available in the market. Increasing the Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF) is usually a straight for...

    Presented at ICALEO 2012

Profile cutting of thin sheet bright metals can be achieved in a cost effective manner through the use of a pulsed fiber laser in conjunction with a galvanometric scanhead without co-axial assist gas. This is attractive where many batches of distinct small parts are manufactured in volume, for instance within the jewellery and the micro-electronics industries.

In this paper the capabilities of a pulsed fiber laser are considered in detail when processing bright metals such as brass, copper and silver. The effect...
