ICALEO 2005 Paper #P516 (Laser Assisted Turning of Hardened Steel)
ICAL05_P516
Laser Assisted Turning of Hardened SteelAuthors:
Katsuhiko Sakai, Shizuoka University; Hamamatsu Japan
Presented at ICALEO 2005
A new machining method for turning of hardened steel is presented in this paper. It is a hybrid machining of conventional turning and laser heating of the material. As hardened steel is too hard to cut, it is grounded to improve its dimensional accuracy, though this process have poor productivity and requires relatively long time. By using laser-heating technology, hardness of steel can be reduced effectively, and thus turning is available for hardened steel instead of grinding. The softened area is limited in front of the cutting tool and then they will be removed, ...

ICAL05_P531
Silicon Laser Alloying for Metal Dusting EnvironmentAuthors:
Muhammad Ejaz, Corrosion and Protection Centre; Manchester UK
Presented at ICALEO 2005
Metal dusting is catastrophic carburization process, which causes metallic materials to disintegrate into particles of graphite, carbides and metal dust. This type of degradation typically takes place in the temperature range 450-800oC in gaseous atmospheres of high carbon activity. The resistance to metal dusting can be improved by increasing the amount of silicon in a metallic material. The silicon content of an alloy is typically kept below about 2%, because it adversely affects the mechanical properties of the material; however, higher concentr...

This study presentates results of cladding experime...
